The overarching theme of Week 1 -- other than the ridiculous performances from a few guys -- was, undoubtedly, injuries.
And with lots of injuries, comes even more waiver wire action.
If you follow the For Fantasy Sake Facebook page, you'd know all of the key injuries and what some of the outlooks for those players are. If you don't, tough, I'm not going over all of the injuries here, pal.
Go give us a follow and keep up with the news.
Now that we've got the shameless plugging out of the way -- nah, brah, I'm not above that -- let's get to the options you should be looking at to fill those voids on your roster.
Go Get 'Em
Tyrell Williams, WR, Oakland Raiders – 63% owned
With Antonio Brown out of Oakland – how fun was it watching that soap opera play out? – we knew someone was going to have to be the de facto No. 1 WR option. The Raiders paid Williams $44 million this offseason, so he was the logical choice and we saw that play out last night. He was in on 100 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, was targeted seven times and saw 60 percent of the team’s total air yards – so they’re not only throwing him the ball, but they’re trying to get it to him down field. With him being 63 percent owned, he isn’t widely available obviously, but he’s worth looking for if you play in a somewhat shallow league and need an option.John Brown, WR, Buffalo Bills – 35% owned
Brown had a big game in his Buffalo debut, going for 123 yards
on seven catches and found paydirt. We know he’s capable of having blow-up
games because he’s such a big-play threat. Volume hasn’t ever really been one
of Brown’s strong suits, but if Week 1 is an indicator of anything, it might be
in this Bills offense. Brown’s 10 targets led the team and his 133 total air
yards was right behind unanimous Top 5 WR Michael Thomas. He garnered almost a
40 percent market share of the Bills’ total air yards, which isn’t a total surprise
based on his skill set, but it’s promising to know they’re willing to utilize
him in that way. A guy with Brown’s all-world speed and ability to shake loose
is always valuable, but if you’re going to add volume on top of it, he’s a
must-add. Plus, you have to love a wideout who has a QB like Josh Allen whose
biggest strength is “throwing that ball over them mountains.”
T.J. Hockenson, TE, Detroit Lions – 30% owned
The numbers speak for themselves – 6 catches, 131 yards and
a score … not bad for a debut, eh? The deeper numbers tell an even better story
for Hockenson, though. His target share was tied for second on the team with
Kenny Golladay – somehow, Danny Amendola led the team with a 29 percent market
share … how is he even in the league still? … It wasn’t just all dinks and dunks
to him either. The Lions were pushing it down the field to him and that’s
proven by the 15.8 aDOT (average depth of target) and 142 total air yards. Now,
I’m not sure if this was just the Cardinals being that bad on defense, or if
this is just the beginning of something great for Hockenson. Obviously, we can’t
expect something like this every week, but it’s a promising start.
Darren Waller, TE, Oakland Raiders – 27% owned
He didn’t put up the gaudy stat line that TJ Hockenson did
in his debut, but Waller was nothing short of impressive. He actually led
Oakland in targets (eight) and was in on 59 of 59 snaps. So, it’s clear to see
they trust him already. Again, game script will probably dictate that the
Raiders will be trailing in a lot of games this season, so he should get pretty
decently consistent volume. Hey, garbage time stats count just the same as
first-quarter stats!
Chris Thompson, RB, Washington Redskins – 19% owned
Thompson was in on 64 percent of Washington’s offensive
snaps. Granted, the game script flipped once they turned back into the Redskins
after somehow jumping out to a lead against the Eagles, and Derrius Guice we
later learned was injured. Thompson led the team with 10 targets. Now, he won’t
get many rushing attempts – that will likely be Adrian Peterson – but what do
we know about Washington? They’re very bad and they’re likely to be trailing in
most every game. Thus, setting the stage for Thompson to do what he does best –
catch the ball. In PPR leagues, Thompson is a great option to fill a role for
you.
