OMG! TODD GURLEY IS DUST! ... and more from overreaction Monday

Another woeful game for Todd Gurley signifies he is as good as done.
That and more in our overreaction Monday.

Lamar Jackson is the best quarterback in football.

Todd Gurley is done. Forever.

And Sammy Watkins outscored Julio Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., Adam Thielin and Tyreek Hill ... COMBINED!

Of course, this is all tongue in cheek. ... right?

Bruh. It's absolutely tongue in cheek. I mean, come on, Week 1 isn't even 24 hours old.

For the purposes of this column, we're going to have some fun and dive into some of the most overreaction things you'll hear across the fantasy landscape after just one game played.

Todd Gurley is dust. It's over for him.

Over his last six games played, Gurley has only managed to average 55.5 yards on the ground and 19.2 on 2.8 receptions per game; and, according to my math, that's a shade under 10 points per game. Now, we find out he's being usurped near the goal line by Malcom Brown -- as evidenced by him scoring the touchdown Sunday against Carolina? AND he has knee issues that no one seems to have figured out? This is the end for Gurley. It's over.

The real: Gurley was actually QUITE productive Sunday against Carolina. Sure, yards-per-carry isn't everything, but he did rack up 97 yards on 14 carries, so his 6.93 per tote was actually really good. The only concerning thing was him seeing just one target. I think it's correct to temper expectations with Gurley going forward -- because I doubt we'll ever see him get the volume he consistently got last year. He may not be 2018 Gurley, but he's far from done.

T.J. Hockenson is the next Travis Kelce/Zach Ertz.

What? 131 yards and a touchdown ... IN HIS FIRST GAME ... isn't enough to impress you? He got the same number of targets Kenny Golladay did (nine), so clearly he's a favorite target of Matthew Stafford. He even set the record for most receiving yards in his debut game by a tight end. Not to mention, they spent a first-round draft pick on him so he's going to be featured in this offense.

The real: Nope. For the time being, I'm not going to put much credence into anything that happens against the Arizona Cardinals. They're arguably the worst team in football -- though, Miami reallllly wants to take that crown it seems -- and they're playing without their best defensive player. Hockenson did tie for second on the Lions in targets at nine with Golladay. However, Danny Amendola -- yes, that Danny Amendola; and yes I was as shocked as you to find out he was still in the league -- led them with 13. THIRTEEN FREAKIN' TARGETS. It's asinine to expect anything more than up-and-down production from Hockenson. And, you'll have to give me more than one game to reach the Kelce/Ertz level.

Sammy Watkins is the new top option in KC with Tyreek Hill out.

It's happeniiiiiing. Sammy Watkins is finally becoming the No. 1 receiver everyone thought he was going to be after being selected No. 4 overall in 2014. All it took was him to have Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback. Watkins didn't just shake free for one 45-yard-plus touchdown, he did it TWICE (49 yards and 68 yards) against Jacksonville, and finished with three TD catches. Once Hill got hurt, Watkins was the apple of Mahomes' eye and caught nine of his 11 targets (three times as many catches as Travis Kelce). Now that Hill is for sure going to miss a few weeks, Watkins is taking over the No. 1 role in KC.

The real: You can't knock what Watkins did. It was the best game of his NFL career. Kudos. But to expect him to be the No. 1 option in that offense? Pssst. Please. That spot is reserved for a goat. THE goat, in fact. Travis. Kelce. During the time that Hill has been off the field -- whether it be due to injury or discipline -- Kelce has been the player to receive the bump in usage and market share of the targets. What we saw play out Sunday was the perfect storm -- a matchup that played to Watkins' strength and a Jags defense that lost Myles Jack because he threw a punch ... at a guy who was wearing a helmet. I mean, what the hell, man? I absolutely believe Watkins will be a productive player, but to assume he'll be a Top 10 WR or better is still a bit of a stretch. Kelce will benefit most from Hill being sidelined. Plus, do we REALLY think Watkins will stay healthy?

Honorable Mentions

Cam Newton is washed; See Derrick Henry really IS good; Melvin Gordon who? Austin Ekeler is better anyway; Chris Godwin > Mike Evans; Evan Engram will finish as the No. 1 TE

Week 3 Waiver Wire: How to replace Brees & Big Ben

Many fantasy owners are feeling the blow of losing Ben Roethlisberger and Drew Brees, but don't just assume you need to rush to pick up their replacements. There are PLENTY of better options.  There were some serious blows dealt during Sunday's action. It wasn't enough that the quarterback I was on since I saw the matchup with Seattle ( Ben Roethlisberger ) blew out his elbow and is requiring season-ending surgery, but fantasy stalwart Drew Brees had to go and tear  ligaments in his hand the required surgery and HE'S out for about six weeks. Like a bad infomercial ... Steelers running back James Conner left Sunday's game as well, however, test results revealed "nothing serious," according to Jeremy Fowler. Devin Singletary tweaked his hamstring and was forced from the game against the Giants -- he had six carries for 57 yards and TD before exiting. Michael Gallup injured his knee during Sunday's route of Washington and will miss 2-4...

Your Guide to DFS Week 1

Chris Carson has the perfect storm to make him one of the best  plays on the entire DFS slate in Week 1.  The news broke a few months ago that sports betting and -- more importantly -- daily fantasy was going to be legalized in the lovely state of Iowa. Allegedly, they were both to be ready to roll by the start of the NFL season. Fast forward to, well, right now, and we're sitting with only ONE of those being legalized. Not sure if you noticed, but the NFL season started Thursday. Way to go, Iowa. Or DraftKings. Or government.  I don't know who the hell to blame, so I'll blame them all.  TRIGGERED!  Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out.  Okay. We're good now. ... Still triggered. But good enough to move on.  You came here for the DFS plays -- though I'm not sure what the actual F you're doing listening to me -- so let's outline how this ditty is going down each week.  How it's going to wo...

Madrigal Might Be More Than A "One-Hit Wonder"

Nick Madrigal could just hit his way into a prospect laden White Sox lineup (NBC Chicago) Like Morpheus searching the Matrix, I think I've finally found the one. A slappy little fast guy without any real power who is worth rostering. Nick Madrigal 2B Chicago White Sox Highest level: AAA Age: 22 ETA: Early 2020 Now most players who lack the ability to hit more than 10 home runs in a season should be left on the waiver wire, or at least be a catcher. Madrigal has found a way to transcend his inability as a hitter by maximizing what he's good at, he doesn't strikeout. Across three leagues last year, Madrigal set a minor league-low 3.3 percent strikeout rate. Additionally, he's not just a tough out -- he produced a slash line of  .331/.398/.424. After being drafted by the White Sox in 2018, Madrigal seemed advertised as a guy who was going to be an asset at the top of the lineup as a single and maybe score kind of asset. However, he took an even greater ...
